Abstract: Voigt discussed Doppler’s effect on the basis of the universal speed of light and the invariance of the wave equation in 1887. He was very close to suggesting a conceptual framework for special relativity. Historical remarks and discussions are made on Voigt’s paper and a translation of his short paper with modern notation is also included.
I. Introduction
Voigt’s 1887 paper ‘ON DOPPLER’S PRINCIPLE’ [1] is a very remarkable work. It is remarkable because it contains several original and fundamental ideas of modern physics:
(a) Voigt appears to be the first physicist to conceive of the idea of the universal speed of light.
(b) He appears to be the first physicist who postulated the invariance of a physics law, the wave equation in ‘an elastic incompressible medium’ (i.e., the aether or ether),

Voigts Arbeit ist kein Beitrag zur Bestätigung der SRT. Der Aufsatz von Ernst und Hsu ist an anderer Stelle im Netz besser zu lesen. Die Autoren heben besonders die Wahl des Elementes (4,4) zu EINS hervor. Bei einer 4×4-Matrix mit 16 Elementen darf auch nicht ein einziges vorgegeben werden, weil das das Ergebnis verfälscht. Dieser Irrtum ist Voigt unterlaufen. Auf andere Weise kommt man auf die Lösung von Lorentz Schauer, im Sept. 2012 an dieser Stelle veröffentlicht und von mir auf der Web-Seite wwlange.de.
